York Art Museum

From St. Leonard's Hospital we headed to the York Art Museum, just outside of Bootham Bar. Most of the art exhibited fell between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries, with a few works from the twentieth century. Several works were by artists from York.

The Ruins of St. Leonard's Hospital

From Micklegate Bar we walked the wall to the ruins of St. Leonard's Hospital, which was the largest hospital in York in Medieval times (and they were surprisingly numerous), but because it was run by monks and nuns, it was forced to close during the Reformation.

The rest of the exhibit was about living in Micklegate Bar, which guards and policy types did until 1918.

After Lunch: Two Fearsome Warriors

We made it back to Micklegate Bar early enough to tour the Museum inside. It had an interest exhibit on the Battle of Towton (1461), the bloodiest battle of the Wars of the Roses.
